We had a Zoom meeting this month. Thank you Covid-19. Nahshon Bishop, Lincoln University-Missouri Cooperative Extension Specialist from Cassville, presented an informative program on Extending your Garden Growing Season. He shared details on successful fall succession planting and online tools to help gardeners plan what and when to plant. We also learned a bit about crop rotation and he shared strategies on High Tunnel greenhouses. Want some reading on the topic? Shon recommended “The Winter Harvest Handbook” by Eliot Coleman. One of them is a Planting Calculator for Fall Harvest Crops. Just plug in the first Fall frost date and it generates a schedule for each cool weather vegetable crop.
Another one is the Succession-Planting Calculator allows you to input the date of your first planting of each crop, then it calculates the dates for later plantings. It also allows you to input your first fall frost date, counting back the appropriate number of days to determine the last date to plant and still get a crop before frost. ~Sam Davis
