Where’s the Garden?
May 27, 2020

A beautiful morning and hard working gardeners made for a fun workday. Karen Reeves, Sue and Sam Davis, Anita Engert, and Jennifer Hudspeth planted Amaryllis Belladona (naked lady) bulbs and Heuchera (coral bells). We weeded and further transitioned the garden from spring to summer by deadheading peonies and cutting back bulb foliage. Plus, two beautiful new concrete planters were added to bookend the garden bench facing the library back door.
We continue the plan to remove the woody and high maintenance perennials and shrubs. Salvia greggii (autumn sage) was removed in preparation for planting a hedge of Emerald Colonnade Holly. Next workday is planned for Wednesday, June 10 where we will concentrate our efforts in front of the building. ~Jennifer Hudspeth

Great work day today! It is such a pleasure working in this space when we are planting and creating beauty vs. battling unwieldy maintenance issues. The joy of gardening.
Anita, Tammy and I starting discussing the garden plan last summer and it’s fun seeing it slowly transform. Jan Scheel, Sue and Sam Davis, Anita Engert and I pitched in on numerous transplants around the garden plus the addition of new plants: the right plant in the right place. Anita also stayed extra time pruning the Japanese Maple and Oak Leaf Hydrangeas in front of the building.

The library budgeted $300 for the garden space. The five hydrangeas, the sedum and heucheras came to $299. We had a nice donation from the two-county library administrator and a couple of master gardeners have donated money for plants.
We have discussed specific plants we would like to add in the future and will work on this as donations and budget allow. We’ll have another workday in two weeks. Please stop by and wander around this beautiful garden. ~Jennifer Hudspeth
May 6, 2020

Springtime gardening and Covid-19 social distancing continued apace when Carroll Electric donated and delivered a large mulch pile to the Berryville Library. Thank you!

The front of the library and county offices are now weeded and mulched. Sue also pruned the Euonymus (burning bush) while Scott moved a mountain of mulch for us to spread. Approximately 1/3 of the mulch remains, and plans are to spread that around the south and east sides of the building. Thanks to Scott Thompson, Regina Hooten and Sue Davis for all of their hard work.
On the day before the “mulch-a-thon,” Anita Engert and I planted two “Snow Queen” Oak Leaf Hydrangeas, another flat of “Sunsparkler” Sedum around the blue cedar, and added several hosta starts. We also weeded the beds, deadheaded irises, lightly pruned boxwood, and fertilized the flowering shrubs. The plan is to remove the woody high maintenance perennials with low maintenance shrubs and herbaceous perennials. This will hopefully make for less work and a more cohesive garden space. ~Jennifer Hudspeth

There were several hands available this afternoon to help at the library. Thanks to Anita Engert, Jennifer Hudspeth, Karen Reeves, Scott Thompson, Regina Hooten, and Nancy Plagge.
All the available mulch was spread and the beds look great! Jennifer planted some Sedum ground cover in the central area bed. This will help fill in that area nicely and help keep the weeds out. We will soon plant two Oakleaf hydrangeas in the beds next to the senior center. All in all it was a great day to be gardening! ~Nancy Silvers
April 11, 2020
Gardening in the time of Covid-19 virus: social distancing for people and weeds. Today we weeded and focused on spring bed work. We began spreading some of the mulch donated by Carroll Electric. We made a dent in the mulch pile, but still have a lot to do. Three Ivory Prince Helleborus (Lenten Rose) were planted. Nancy P. removed spreading salvia and with Sue’s help pulled up the Russian Sage – invasive. We also got the budding peonies and the hostas covered to protect them from frost this week. On March 12, Anita Engert and I planted two Limelight Hydrangeas and one Little Lime Hydrangea. The spring garden changes rapidly. (Below) ~Jennifer H.
Leap Day 2020

We had a beautiful warm day with hard working gardeners and accomplished quite a bit. Scott Thompson, Anita Rissler, Sue and Sam Davis, Nancy Plagge, Brenda Lowery, Tammy McCance, Anita Engert and Jennifer H pruned, transplanted, raked and cleaned the beds in both front and back garden areas.
Part of the work for this first major spring effort at the library was to remove some plants which are maintenance headaches and to transplant some stock to more suitable locations in the garden.
Nancy P also assembled the master gardener memorial bench, which will honor fellow member gardeners who have contributed so much to the beauty of the many county projects since the 1990’s.
Sue and Sam dug out and removed the pesky mahonia (we were all doubtful it could be done by hand), and the beds are ready for new, low maintenance shrubs and perennials. We didn’t have time to tackle most of the weeds in the beds and the english ivy needs a severe pruning. We will plan on another workday in a couple of weeks to tackle the weeds, ivy, and any leftover projects. I appreciate Jennifer leading the workday. ~ Nancy Silvers

We had a wonderful work day. The weather was perfect, and the hands were many. So much was accomplished in a short time. We pulled the dead annuals and gave some perennials their winter buzz cut. The front gardens got a sprucing up and lots of Daffodil and Tulip bulbs were planted in the beds. I can’t wait until spring to see the pop of color all the bulbs will bring!
It was wonderful having some of our new MG’s with us. Sharon Roberts, Dave Cyrier, and Norm Waters joined our seasoned MG’s Sue and Sam Davis, Scott Thompson, Jennifer Hudspeth, Karen Reeves, Nancy Plagge and myself.
I so appreciate all the hard work everyone put in today and throughout 2019. We are done for the year. Our next workday will be sometime in late February to prune back some grasses and other perennials. As it gets closer, I will monitor the weather and make sure to give everyone notice for the date and time.
Once again, thank you for all your help to ensure the Berryville Library was well kept and beautiful during all of 2019! ~ Nancy Silvers
November 4, 2019

We were pleasantly surprised on arrival to see Carl Ward and his helper removing leaves from the gardens with a vacuum. We really appreciate Carl and Razorback Lawn Care for their help!
Sue Davis and Scott Thompson worked diligently at removing the majority of the Bermuda Grass in the Day Lily garden next to the side of the library. I so appreciate Sue, coming out on her birthday, and Scott working so hard in the sun. I pulled dead annuals and trimmed those that still had some life, removed weeds and took some more pictures for our mapping project. When I was done I helped with picking up the Bermuda grass piles. ~Nancy Silvers
September 21, 2019

We had a great workday, this past Saturday. The weather was a bit cooler and overcast. Jennifer Hudspeth, Sam Davis and Scott Thompson tackled weeding and cleaning up the library front gardens. Sue Davis, Karen Reeves and I weeded, dead headed and cleaned up the back gardens. Jennifer H did some watering after everyone left. Sue printed labels for our plant markers and Karen and I placed them at almost all the plants. There are a few we misidentified this spring, so they will be taken care of shortly.
The gardens look beautiful due to the efforts of Jan Scheel, Jennifer Hudspeth, Tammy McCance and Anita Engert. They have weeded and watered between our scheduled work days. Thank you!
When we were finished working, we had a great discussion on garden mapping and how we will share the information both in hard copy and on the website. I am grateful to Sue Davis and Jennifer Hudspeth for their help in competing this project.

Jan Scheel, Karen Reeves, Tammy McCance, Nancy Plagge, Scott Thompson and myself did some weeding, dead heading, cutting down the Iris leaves and cutting back some of the plants that were blocking some of the walkways.
We were lucky to have a gentle breeze and to finish before the temperatures became unbearable. All of the new annuals are well established and bring such color to the gardens!
I so appreciate everyone coming out and sharing the workload-many hands make light work. We missed those that were not able to join us.
Once again, thank you everyone for your help keeping these gardens beautiful I know they are enjoyed by all who come to the Library and Tax Office!

Working the Late Summer Garden
June 30, 2019
Jennifer Hudspeth organized a work day to plant annuals at the library. Anita Engert, a Friends of the Library board member got approval to purchase the plants and supplies.
Jennifer Hudspeth, Tammy McCance, and Anita Engert planted purslane, rose moss, begonia, coleus and hostas. They also transplanted liriope and miscanthus. Jennifer’s husband, Bill, helped secure a planter to the pedestal of the table that keeps getting knocked over, and placed it in one of the garden beds. The Library Garden has such a pop of color now and will be even better when these young plants become established.
The new plants will require frequent watering until they get established – especially the planter. I would love some volunteers to help with the watering. A hose attached to the spigot is available. All watering hours are Sanctioned work hours. If anyone is able please contact me so I can make a schedule.
Once again, I so appreciate Jennifer organizing this work day!! ~ Nancy Silvers
June 21, 2019

We had an amazing work day at the Library. Eight Master Gardeners weeded and trimmed plants in the front and back gardens. We sure do appreciate Jan Scheel, who came early and worked hard in the front of the library and some in the back too!
Karen Reeves and Sam and Sue Davis worked around the front entrance pruning shrubs, while Tammy McCance, Jennifer Hudspeth, Scott Thompson and I focused on the back gardens. We pruned, removed leaves and weeds in the beds and weeded in the pathway. It was a great day despite-the high heat and humidity.
The next work day is scheduled for Saturday July 13 from 8-10. I will send out a reminder as we get closer. Thank you to everyone who came to make the library gardens beautiful for the public and employees to enjoy.

Before I share about our work day, I would like to share this message I received from Jan Scheel, on Friday, as she was unable to come Saturday. “I worked at the library after running this morning, got the worst from the front door and then went to the back. It was so bad back there, chickweed practically making a mat over the whole place, as you will see when you look around the big tree. I worked in the center bed, the bed around the nice tree, and around the roses, some next to the senior center wall. Then I got the worst from the “path” since if someone decided to use Round-up on it, it would be a horrible dead mat. I did not trim anything. I think a saw will be required to remove one tree coming up in the rises in front!” I truly appreciate her efforts and want to thank Jan for her hard work!!
Saturday we had Karen Reeves, Sue and Sam Davis, Scott Thompson and myself. We each took a garden and weeded and cut back some plants that needed trimming. The gravel walkway is a mess with weeds growing through the gravel. We pulled some of those weeds but it is difficult to do so. I will be speaking with Judge Sam Barr to see if the county can help with controlling those weeds. Sue and Karen also suggested asking Judge Sam Barr if we could have a compost bin made for behind the Senior Center to put all the weeds in instead of having a member take all the weeds home. It could be a good education tool as well. I will also ask if County workers can help put the cement table back up on its stand as we found it knocked over when we arrived.
When we had our March 7th workday we heavily pruned back the Dogwood and Roses and Sat we were greeted with flowers on the Dogwood-something that no one remembers happening and the roses were full of gorgeous bloom. Also the Hens and Chicks were in full bloom!!
I so appreciate everyone coming out on a holiday weekend to work. We were blessed with a gentle breeze as we worked. The gardens now look so much better!!
I’m planning to have our next workday Sat. June 22 from 9-11. We will work on the front beds and I am sure there will be more weeds to pull in the back gardens. ~ Nancy Silvers

Berryville Library We had a small but powerful work day group at the Library on Thursday 3/20. Karen Reeves, Sam Davis and I did quite a bit of pruning and leaf removal.I so appreciate their knowledge of what needs to be pruned and how much. I am working on our plant list and care instructions but have much to learn!!
Jeanne, from the tax office, came out to let us know how much everyone enjoys the garden. She cleared up the mystery of the three benches!! Judge Sam Barr had the inmates build them out of recycled metal and wood. They are a welcome addition to the garden and we discussed the possibility of having memorial plaques placed on the wood portion of the bench, Nancy Plagge may want to speak with Sam Barr in reference to the plaques. Jeanne, from the tax office mentioned someone who passed that they would like to have remembered as well.
While we got a lot done, for a small group, there is still more pruning to do and I will watch the weather to plan another work day soon. We missed so many members and hope they can join is next time!! ~ Nancy Silvers
November 3, 2018

We had a small but mighty group today. It was wonderful having Karen Reeves back – healed from her fall and subsequent hip surgery. I am grateful she brought her leaf blower. Alas, there were too many leaves and the batteries tuckered out before we were finished. Also helping today were Stacy Maring, Tammy McCance and Jennifer Hudspeth. We all tackled the leaves in the back garden. It was like an assembly line getting all the leaves to the curb in two big piles.
Tammy pruned some low branches that were hanging in the pathways, and Stacy and Jennifer cleaned up the front gardens. Tammy and Karen planted some daffodil bulbs that Tammy was kind enough to donate. They will add a pop of color to the gardens in the spring. During our break Tammy suggested it might be good for members to donate their extra perennials in the spring, and we all thought that was a great idea.
When we were all done some of us went over to Hometown Scoops for coffee and a bite. It was a great time of fellowship.
Special thanks to Jennifer for contacting Carl Ward with Razorback Lawncare. Carl has agreed to come with his special machine to suck up the leaves and he will dispose of them. We really appreciate the help because it would have been really difficult to bag all those leaves.
Many members were missed. I won’t list you all – I’m afraid I might leave someone out, but you know who you are!!
We know many more leaves will be falling but, for now, the gardens look so much better! Some mentioned having another workday once the leaves are all down. Unfortunately I won’t be able to help, but the group said they would gladly organize it. The date and time to be determined later, and I will let everyone know when to show up. Thanks again to everyone! ∼ Nancy Silvers

October 4, 2018
We had a very productive workday with few hands. Jennifer Hudspeth, Scott Thompson, Stacy Maring, Deb Thompson and myself. Scott worked on burying the irrigation hose. I worked on placing the rocks around the big oak tree while Jennifer hauled all the extra rocks out of the garden and into a pile next to the building. Deb and Stacy arrived while we were taking a little break and discussing what we should do with the extra rocks and some things I learned at the PNG Conference. We know of one area we will use some of the rocks but have more than we need so we need to brain storm and see if there is another area to use them. After the break, Jennifer and Stacy tackled some of the weeds in the front. Scott and I continued with burying the irrigation hose and Deb even was able to pull a weed or too. It sure was nice to see Deb! I appreciate all the hard work everyone put in today.
We missed Sam and Sue Davis and Anita Rissler, who had a prior commitments. Aaron Thompson, Nancy Plagge, Jan Scheel, Amanda Cagle, Tiffany Windle, and Neta Sue Stamps — we missed you!! Mary Knight I miss you, your smile and knowledge! Jane Houseal, I hope Harry is doing well enough soon so you can join us again. If there is someone not listed here that normally works on the Library Project, please let me know — I don’t want to leave anyone out!!
Jennifer and I went to the new shop on the square, Hometown Scoops, and had a bite to eat and enjoyed getting to know each other a bit. Our next Library work day will be Saturday Oct 27 from 9-11 to weed and place some rocks alongside one of the gardens. Might be time to bag up leaves too!
Once again, thank you everyone for working on the Library project I know the community enjoys it very much and I appreciate each one of you so much. ∼ Nancy Silvers
Thursday, September 20, 2018
We had a small but hard working crew today – Aaron, Jan, Amanda and myself. Aaron was able to fix the water connection! At first we thought a piece needed to be replaced, and Makayla (from the Tax office) was ready to run get the part. Aaron then realized one piece was in backwards!! Unfortunately, he got quite a shower when the water was first turned on. Now we will be able to water regularly – Thank you, Aaron!!
Jan and Amanda tackled some bermuda grass. Jan did some pruning and weeding. Aaron worked on the weeds around the big tree, and we all worked on the English Ivy that is climbing the tree. In all, considering it was 80 degrees, we got a lot accomplished. Jan often comes after her morning run to do some weeding! Thank you, Jan!!
Our next work day will be Thursday Oct 4th, 8-10 a.m. and I hope to send out reminders as the date gets close. It would be great if we could go to the new Coffee Shop, Hometown Scoops, on the square, for a refreshing drink or ice cream when we are done! Yum!
We missed Sue and Sam who had plans for the day. Scott, Jennifer, Nancy and Tammy sure were missed too. I have received word that Jane’s husband, Harry, is doing better. We miss her and pray Harry mends quickly from his stroke and heart attack. We miss Mary too!!
Jeanie and Makayla, from the Tax Office, brought out some cold water and it was greatly appreciated. They love the gardens. As we worked several citizens passed by and let us know how nice the gardens look. We couldn’t do it without each one that comes out to work. I appreciate each one so much. ∼ Nancy Silvers

A Fabulous Work Day at the Berryville Library
Nancy Plagge, Nancy Silvers, Sue Davis, Jan Scheel, Tammy McCance and Scott Thompson did a wonderful job of weeding and moving mulch to transform the library front and garden into a beautiful oasis. Julie Hall, and all the library staff are so appreciative. They continually hear compliments on the garden. As one tax office employee said it is her place of serenity and rest. At 3 every afternoon she takes her coffee out and relaxes. They all ask that I thank the MG for them. So thank you, your work is appreciated.
Joe Scott and three of his employees donated their time Friday afternoon to put the dirty base down. Tim McKinney ,our mayor ,donated the equipment used in this project. County Judge Sam Barr arranged for the county to donate the dirty base. Please take a few minutes to go by and see how nice it looks. We really owe Joe and his crew a great big thanks. They came after they got off work and donated their time to help us.
It is so rewarding when everyone works together to beautify our community.
This was my last work day. Nancy Silvers has graciously agreed to be project chair. I love the MG and it breaks my heart to have to withdraw from working with you. But physically I cannot do it any more. Nancy will do an outstanding job. ∼ Mary Knight
July 31, 2018

We had an awesome workday at the library today! Thanks to Aaron and Scott Thompson, Sam and Sue Davis, Jan Scheel, Nancy Silvers, and Anita Rissler. I cannot thank these hard working MG enough. Today they went beyond the call of duty.
The rocks are around the beds and it looks so good. We still have to finish around the big tree and put down the dirty base and that part of the project will be finished.
I do not know if I have shared the good news with you but Nancy Silvers is my co-chair on the library project.
After we called it a day we went to McDonalds for coffee and enjoyed our time of sharing our thoughts. We also got to see pictures of the beautiful grandsons of Sam and Sue and Jan Scheel. Also pictures of the awesome woodwork Sam is doing. What craftsmanship and talent. We met Nancy’s husband as he gave her a “drive by” hug.
Again Master Gardeners thank you for making our library a beautiful oasis for everyone to enjoy! (Besides you are so much fun to be with!) ∼ Mary

Aaron and Scott Thompson, Sue Davis, Jennifer Hudspeth, Karen Reeves, Nancy Silvers, Nancy Plagge, and Jane Houseal did an outstanding job of transforming the little garden at the library into a beautiful oasis. Perfect weather made our work enjoyable while sharing gardening knowledge, having fun, and laughing a lot. It is so rewarding to be a Master Gardener. We not only cultivate flowers but good friends. Thanks to all for your dedication and hard work today. ~Mary Knight

December 15, 2017
A great big thank you to our new members Jennifer Boardman, Tiffany Windle and Carol Fowler for their hard work on a cold morning. Jan Scheel, Karen Reeves, Sue Davis, Deb, Scott, and Aaron Thompson joined them in raking and bagging leaves, planting bulbs, and mulching. The project is now bedded down for the winter.
Carroll Electric furnished three strong volunteers who were outstanding workers with a great upbeat and fun attitude. They made our job so much easier and we could not have done it with out them. Nancy Plagge was so thoughtful to have us a big wheelbarrow, pitch fork, and rake waiting for us at the site. (Another Carroll Electric employee)
Our workday was a wonderful time of hard work and getting to know our new members and meeting the hard working and fun men from Carroll Electric. I have to share this with you, we had about a dozen bags of leaves in front of the library and a man stopped and ask if he could have them. We loaded his truck up with great big smiles of appreciation.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Summer Garden at the Library

March 23, 2107
The garden between the library and the Senior Citizen Center is really growing into spring form after master gardeners efforts on the plant beds. Much weeding, trimming, mulching and stone work around the beds have laid the foundation for new plantings – snapdragons this week.
Check out photos from Jennifer H-
Spring is popping all over and so are master gardeners. Work on sprucing up the garden between the library and senior center began in earnest in February due to the above normal temperatures this winter. Yep, tee shirts in February!
