New Magnolia Bloom
New Magnolia Bloom

Jennifer Hudspeth, Anita Engert, Nancy Plagge, and Sue Davis met in the morning to check on the garden.  The courtyard area still looked very good.

The city had taken the large boulders from the back of the bed under the old oak tree to be used at their spring rejuvenation project and delivered some fill dirt there to replace them.  That area really needed to be addressed so everyone pitched in to smooth and rake the dirt and remove the rocks from it.  Some of the stones provided by Jennifer Boardman were still available. We placed some along the edge of the bed near the senior center and installed others to replace the boulders. We still need more stones to retain the fill.

Jennifer noticed the top of a stone under the oak so began to dig to remove it.  The stone grew and grew and grew.  At about 15 inches deep she began to try to pry it out.  Stubborn stone!  As she was about to give up, Anita gave it a try, and viola –  it came up.  It was decided that it could be a “point of interest” object, so rather than try to wrestle it away it sits proudly next to the hostas.

The team began to look at the existing drip irrigation and determined that the hose in the center bed was a drip emission hose and should probably be replaced with some sprinkler-type assembly.

Jennifer suggested that the front of the library should be checked as well, so everyone spent a few minutes pulling out uninvited plants along the side of the tax office as well as some strays along the wall of the library near the remaining nandina.  Euonymus (burning bush) was cut to the ground at our previous work day in preparation for their removal. A new wall mural project by the Friends of the Library will grace that location. ~ Sue Davis
