Emerald Colonnade Hollies
Three new Emerald Colannade Hollies left of Senior Center Door

ny and warm at the library workday. Anita Engert and Jennifer Hudspeth transplanted lambs ear, planted perennial Veronica (speedwell), fertilized the Blue Atlas Cedar, weeded, and groomed the spent daylilies. Jan Scheel came by early on her morning run and helped with the weeding. Library staff plans a socially distanced “Gnome House” children’s activity in the garden.

Children will be making gnome houses similar to one in the photo, and we look forward to the gnomes help tending the garden. Even the smallest help in the garden is appreciated!

On Saturday morning before the workday, we planted three Emerald Colonnade Hollies. Andrew Hudspeth volunteered with this rather large project, and we amended the soil with shredded leaf mulch and cotton burr compost. The hollies provide a nice hedge on the east end of the garden.

We dug roots of one of the sick daylilies and the extension office sent it to UA plant pathologist Sherrie Smith for diagnosis. Pythium root rot was confirmed. We plant to address this with improving the drainage and possibly adding plants more tolerant to damp soil.

A big thank you to Sue Davis. Sue has volunteered to set up the irrigation system. If anyone knows where the old irrigation timers and supplies are located, or would like to assist Sue with the project, your help would be greatly appreciated. Next workday is Wednesday, July 8. Due to heat, we will start at 9:00am. ~Jennifer Hudspeth
