March 14, 2024 Little Lake Eureka

Carroll County Master Gardeners had their first official workday March 14, with Linda Rogers and Jennifer Boardman participating.  The Lenten Roses and narcissus flowers are beautiful now!  We saw many poppy and larkspur seedlings, and the native cardinal flower and blue lobelia are greening up.

The boxwood in the deer topiary is filling in nicely.  We thinned the Lenten Rose from around the epimedium plants, trimmed back last year’s peony growth along with many other perennials.  Pollinators frequent this garden and we try to keep this in mind when caring for it.  We lean toward managing “weeds” there instead of eliminating them because they are a nectar source for pollinators.  We also manage our violets in our flower beds since they are a larval host for the Diana fritillary butterfly (Arkansas state butterfly).

Our next workday is scheduled for Thursday, March 28 at 10am.  Please bring gloves, pruners, trowels, shovels, etc.  If you would like to volunteer but cannot help at this time, please contact Jennifer Boardman.  Volunteers receive sanctioned project work hours for helping!

Come by and visit or help take care of this garden.  It is beautiful there all year long!
