Worm Composting for the Home Gardener

Our speaker this month was Sherry Sanders, White County Agriculture Extension Agent. The topic was worm composting for the home gardener. She first provided an overview of the basics on composting: what materials can and can’t be composted, what goes on inside a compost pile, managing a pile and the benefits of composting to the garden.

The remainder of her Zoom program focused on vermicomposting, enter the worms. We learned about how worms can turn food waste into “black gold” to enhance your garden soil by improving plant root growth, adding microorganisms, improving water holding capacity, enhancing germination and plant growth, and improving the soil’s physical structure.
