Berryville Library – August 5, 2020

CCMGs Karen Reeves, Sue Davis, Anita Engert, and Jennifer Hudspeth met at the Berryville Public Library gardens for the twice monthly workday. The focus was cleaning up the spent daylily blooms & foliage, watering, and general weed control.

Unfortunately one of the five hydrangeas purchased and planted in the spring has died. Snow Queen oak leaf hydrangea has multi-season interest and we want to replace with same variety. White River Nursery has agreed to a replacement, and is currently out of this variety. We’ll need to wait until fall (or possibly spring 2021) for new plant shipments.

The Amaryllis Belladonna (naked lady lilies) planted in the spring are beautiful and popping up around the garden. The panicle hydrangeas are in full bloom, as well as the Buddlia (Butterfly bush) and Speedwell (Veronica). The newly planted Emerald Colonnade hollies are looking great with their supplemental watering by soaker hose working on a timer. Sue is working on a plan to irrigate the entire garden and will bring necessary equipment on the next workday.

The county tax collector’s office is installing a handicapped accessible dropbox in the front of the building. They asked if we wanted to relocate the Knockout rose planted in the area. After discussion, it was determined the rose would have a minimal chance of survival if removed and replanted at this time. The area will be assessed at a later time for a possible replacement plant. ~Jennifer Hudspeth
