The Carroll County Master Gardeners hosted a public education event on April 27 at the Carroll County Fairgrounds. The Living Succulent Wreath class was a big hit. The class filled up after two days of advertisement and had a wait list. Olivia Foster the Carroll County Extension agent for ANR instructed the class.
The first step was to mix the soil for the wreath. We used a potting mix, mixed with osmocote plus, and water to serve as the base of the wreath.
- The next step was to fill the thigh stocking with all of the soil we had mixed to build the base to plant the succulents in.
- Then we wrapped the stocking now filled with soil with moss and tied it to the wreath base with floral wire.
- Once that step was complete it was time to let the creative juices flow. Each table was supplied with several succulents. Participants were instructed to cut small openings through the stockings and moss making sure they did not cut through the floral wire to make a spot to plant their succulents in the wreath. There were no design rules only to plant them in a way that it made you happy to look at.
It was so much fun getting to walk around and see what all of the participants had designed at the conclusion of the class.
